Charles Alexander

Charles feels the time is right for the release. “Inauguration Day is such an auspicious occasion. Given the recent conversation around immigration, instigated mostly by our incoming President, the timing was perfect and appropriate.”
“I wrote this song a while ago but never got around to officially releasing it. It’s the song in my set that almost always gets a strong, emotional response from the audience…one way or another.”
Now with the help of producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist, Tom Prasada-Rao, the song finally sees the light of day.
The song premiered to great acclaim on notable indie music blog, Mother Church Pew.
Alexander came to the US from Malaysia more than 20 years ago. A musician all his life, he obtained a degree in Biotechnology at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. He eventually got married and moved to Nashville to pursue a career in music as a songwriter and artist. All the while still holding down his “day job” at Vanderbilt University as a bioinformaticist mining information from genomic databases related to the Human Genome Project.
He became a naturalized citizen in 2008 so that he could help vote President Barack Obama into office. “He was so inspiring. He had such an incredible world view. A President who had great empathy and understanding of other cultures. He came by it authentically by virtue of actually living and growing up in foreign countries. And he might be the best orator this side of President Kennedy.”
Alexander transitioned full time into the music industry five years ago. Besides managing other artists, he now has a successful business helping artists navigate the world of music streaming services such as Spotify.
“I hope I’m a fairly good albeit unusual representation of the American immigrant dream. But my dream came to fruition in part because I was welcomed with open arms by folks who were extremely generous with their hearts and their deeds. The America I know is true to Emma Lazarus’ poem on the pedestal of The Statue of Liberty. You know the one:
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
“I hope we never lose that as a nation,” he concludes optimistically.
The song is available on his own Outside The Box Music label from all major digital music outlets.
